Burma to reopen schools a month after cyclone

The United Nations and aid groups say children in cyclone-devastated Burma may be forced to attend damaged schools when classes resume tomorrow, while victims in camps may be more vulnerable to disease because of inadequate aid.

Unicef says more than 4,000 schools serving 1.1 million children were damaged or destroyed by the storm and more than 100 teachers were killed.

The UN Children’s Fund says as a result, the government plans to train volunteer teachers and hold some classes in camps and other temporary sites.

Anupama Rao Singh, Unicef’s regional director, said construction materials were still on the way and more time was needed to rebuild schools and train new teachers.

The May 2-3 cyclone killed 78,000 people and left another 56,000 missing.
